At GR8, we always aim to make a difference within the community, and our recent volunteering efforts with RHS Wisley at the Guildford Family Centre truly embodied that spirit. It was a proud moment for us when one of our team members, Ben, took the initiative to contribute to this meaningful project, alongside his brother Sam, who works for RHS Wisley.

Breathing New Life into an Overgrown Area

The Guildford Family Centre is a key community space, providing support and services for families in the area. However, the outdoor space, which could have been a fantastic area for children to play and learn, had become overgrown with thorns, weeds, and unusable turf. That’s where the collaboration between RHS Wisley and GR8 came into action.

Ben and Sam worked together to tackle the challenging task of clearing out the old grassy area. Stripping away the thick turf, they uncovered the potential for a beautiful and functional outdoor space. It wasn’t easy work, but their determination to create something beneficial for the local community kept them going.

A New Outdoor Haven for Learning and Play

Once the space was cleared, it was time for the transformation to begin. With a plan in mind, Ben and Sam set to work building flower beds and planting new hedges. These additions not only enhanced the aesthetic of the area but also created a safe, green environment for the children to enjoy.

The aim was to design a space that encourages children to engage with nature, offering them a place to play, explore, and learn about the environment in a hands-on way. Whether it’s tending to the flower beds or simply enjoying the outdoors, the new garden space provides countless opportunities for education and fun.

The Power of Community Volunteering

This project is a prime example of how community-driven initiatives can have a lasting impact. By volunteering time and effort, Ben, Sam, RHS Wisley, and GR8 have given the Guildford Family Centre a wonderful new asset—one that will serve families for years to come. It’s also a reminder of the incredible things that can be achieved when people come together for a good cause.

We’re incredibly proud of Ben for his dedication to this project, and we look forward to seeing the continued growth and development of the outdoor space at the Guildford Family Centre. This volunteering effort is just one example of the positive contributions GR8 aims to make within our community.

TIME TO RACE @uttlesfordfoodbank

Uttlesford Foodbank turns 10 years old this year, not an occasion to celebrate as such - our goal is to end the need for food banks altogether - but we’re extremely proud of the support that we’ve provided our community over the last decade and are holding a number of events to commemorate the occasion.

One of event that we’re particularly excited about is the Uttlesford Foodbank Day(ish) Rave, being held at Fairycroft House in Saffron Walden on the 19th of October between 3 and 11pm. They will be joined by the cream of Saffron Walden’s DJs and one of its finest bands, who will all be sharing the best of disco and house of all varieties from over the decades with us. They will also be joined by Bonnefirebox Sourdough Pizzas and Ginporium selling the finest gins and cocktails, the Fairycroft bar will also be open for business.

Since the pandemic, demand on the service has increased three-fold and the impact of the cost-of-living crisis has significantly diminished the amount of donations they receive. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the food bank. Tickets are £12:50 for 16 and over, under 16s are free until 8pm (free child tickets can be purchased alongside full price tickets) and can be purchased at https://foodbankdayrave.eventbrite.com.
